Voltage Measurement

How to Measure Voltage

To measure voltage across any load, first connect the probes of multimeter to the voltage terminal as shown in right image. Then connect the leads across the load as shown in left image.

In above example to measure voltage, we have connected a voltmeter parallel to it which shows the voltage across the load.

Voltmeter Connections

Voltmeter has two probes:

First Probe

Connected to live wire

Second Probe

Connected to neutral wire

Understanding Voltage Measurement

Voltage in terms of differential potential is measured by voltmeter.

Important Technical Note

It is to mention that no current flows through the probes in voltage measurement because voltage terminals act as open circuit (Very high impedance).

Key Points to Remember

  • Voltage is always measured in parallel with the load
  • Voltmeter has very high input impedance to minimize loading effect
  • Proper polarity must be observed when connecting probes
  • Select appropriate voltage range on the multimeter
  • Ensure safety by checking equipment before making connections
